It takes a resilient pangolin to brave the horrible situation of the illegal wildlife market. Pangolins are fragile, very shy, and elusive in nature. They are sensitive creatures – a major reason why they do not do well in captivity.
Quite a number of pangolins rescued from the illegal wildlife market by the Pangolin Conservation Guild Nigeria (PCGN) are not always in optimum health. A lot of them would have been stressed and with sustained injuries, some with mild systemic problems and some infected with ectoparasites such as ticks. Stress-inducing situations can lead to their mortality.
A female pangolin which was rescued from the illegal wildlife trade was released into the forest on the 16th of May post-rehabilitation. She was stressed but resilient. When she first arrived at PCGN, she was always curled up with no vigor. We relate with the pangolins in a calm manner so as to foster a feeling of trust in them. With time, she warmed up to us and now she has been released into a protected forest. Pangolins are the most trafficked mammals in the world. Their numbers are fast decreasing and there is a need to do everything possible to save them from extinction.
