The Pangolin Conservation Guild Nigeria has said to mark this year’s World Pangolin Day, it will embark on an awareness campaign for the preservation of pangolin, an endangered mammal.
The guild, in a statement on Thursday by its chairman, Prof. Olajumoke Morenikeji, said it was collaborating with AFRINET Radio and TV Network, African Pangolin Working Group South Africa, and the Uganda Wildlife Service.
Morenikeji, a professor of Zoology at the University of Ibadan, said, “Pangolin, which curls up into a ball when frightened, is the world’s most trafficked mammal and despite the severity of its poaching in Nigeria, many Nigerians have never heard of pangolins.
“This collaboration will help generate the energy, expertise, and capacity to save the pangolin, which is the most heavily trafficked mammal globally.
“The pangolin’s dire situation is further underscored by the recent inclusion of two African species on the IUCN Endangered list.”
